To extend our tour of the French Riviera, for a little day trip we hoped on the train down to Cannes. From Nice to Cannes, there is a simple train ride circa thirty minutes along the coast. If nothing else, it's a beautiful ride with some fantastic views! Definitely worth while taking a little day trip, once arrived into Cannes, you are moments from the bustle of the shops and equally not far at all from the beach. Unlike Nice, Cannes has some lovely sandy beaches, stretchy across the coastline. We did find these got busier after lunch so perhaps head down earlier to pick a good spot!
When arriving and exploring Cannes, it does take a moment to take in the flashy designer stores, gold Ferrari's and boats bigger than football stadiums; but I guess that adds to the charm! As we'd spent our quota of time sat on the beach, we researched into things to do in Cannes and discovered the boat rides out to the Lerins islands. You catch the boat from the port to the right hand side of the beach, it's not too pricey to hop on the boat and they leave every half an hour. The journey itself is only about 10 minutes but hold on to your hats, as it gets breezey out there!
Lerins Island is a vast of sand and greenlife. There's an old fort, large pond, look out spot and a few eateries to explore whilst there. When you get into the thick of the island, it does begin to feel a bit desolate but the rugged coastline against the backdrop of the aqua water is beyond breathtaking. It didn't feel like we had spent much time here before the sun got a bit too much and we longed for some shade, but in fact several hours of wandering has past. We hoped back on the boat where we caught it and were heading back to the mainland.
We soon headed back to the train station and made our way back to Nice for dinner. Cannes itself had some fantastic shopping streets with everything from high end to stores such as Pimkie and Pull & Bear. We didn't have time, nor the energy, to have a good look around but if you do intend of spending some holiday cash, it's a must here! As lovely as Cannes was, you need to prepare for evidence of a lot of money and some very busy streets.
